Temple University Hospital is one of the major academic medical centers in the Philadelphia area. HGE Healthcare Solutions is a spin-off company of Temple University Hospital and is soon to commercialize some of its research in the pulmonary space. The company offers multiple mobile platforms for disease management and telemedicine services for patients.
The client initially set out to develop a mobile application for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD) across Android & iOS. Rolled out to users through MDM, the app provides early detection of deviations in patient symptoms to enable early clinical intervention. However, a few weeks into the app development, we soon realised that the whole project needed to work on very strict deadlines with very unexpected, short notice documentations made available for processing. Added to this was the client’s future plan which entailed creating multiple similar mobile applications over a relatively short period of time. The applications also needed to be CE marked and FDA approved for they handled sensitive medical information of patients spread across Europe and USA.
The most critical challenge was to deliver robust mobile applications within strict timelines. We recognized that in order to meet our client’s objectives, it was best to assign dedicated resources to our client on a contractual basis who would work full-time only on the projects given by the client.
RNF Technologies also a staff augmentation company provided offshore dedicated resources to the client who worked overtime to develop multiple healthcare mobile applications for patients. The developmental resources operated month on month, increasing in number and delivering apps across Android & iOS. We successfully delivered the principal COPD Co-Pilot application which is used by patients primarily for symptom reporting. In close consultation with the client, the developers soon developed another mobile application - an offshoot of the principal app - focused on interventional pulmonary treatments and available in 4 different languages. All applications are primarily aimed for use by patients and medical practitioners and hence store sensitive patient medical reports. A pre-cursor when applying for a CE [European Conformity] mark in Europe and FDA [Food and Drug Administration] approval in the US ,the application code structure underwent rigorous penetration tests conducted by an audit company to come up with zero major defects. This only reaffirmed the sincere efforts put into developing multiple apps for our client.
The applications have reduced inpatient admissions, inpatient days, and emergency department visits by over 50%. We are currently working on another application for liver transplant patients for our client. Boosted by COPD CO-Pilot application’s success, we have further extended our contract to continue providing staff augmentation. With a complete revamp of the COPD app lined up for 2017, RNF Technologies continues to remain HGE Healthcare Solutions’ technology partner for times to come.
